The recovery of Ukraine, the energy resilience of municipalities, and the attraction of international investment were among the key topics discussed during working sessions at the UK House of Lords. Two thematic sessions on infrastructure and construction, as well as energy, were held in London with the participation of Yuliya Chufistova, Member of the Presidium of the Mayors’ Club Ukraine and Director of the Ukrainian Municipal Economic Development Agency (UMEDA). The event was organized by UK Friends of Ukraine with the participation of British experts, parliamentarians and representatives of the professional community.
Particular attention during the energy session was given to the situation at the local level. Yuliya Chufistova presented an overview of the challenges Ukrainian municipalities are currently facing and how mayors and local governments are preparing for another difficult winter season. At the same time, a key topic of the discussions was the practical engagement of British financing in Ukraine’s recovery. Potential partners are interested in Ukrainian projects but expect a clear understanding of risks, financing mechanisms, insurance instruments and the economic viability of investments.
Participants also discussed the prospects for the practical implementation of the UK-Ukraine 100 Year Partnership, the long-term partnership between the United Kingdom and Ukraine. For our organization and its members, this intergovernmental cooperation is of particular importance, as municipalities represent one of the key levels where recovery needs are translated into concrete projects – in energy, infrastructure, housing, local economic development and other areas.
The participation of Mayors’ Club representatives in such open discussions helps communicate the real needs of Ukrainian municipalities to international partners while also creating the conditions and identifying concrete steps for new investment, municipal and interinstitutional partnerships.
Ukraine’s recovery requires not only resources, but also well-prepared projects and systematic international cooperation. Members of the Mayors’ Club, together with their strategic partner Economy of Trust Ukraine, are actively working to bring these elements together.
